The girl was “practicing her Kung Fu” and making some pretty fierce faces.

We decided to have fun making faces and talking about emotions. Here are some great ones!

The scientist

The girl came home with homework this week. Of course I was very happy to see that it was science! The girl was supposed to set up an ant picnic and then see which food the ants liked the best. The girl chose:
Mac and cheese
Chicken meatball
Apple
Watermelon

She “predicted” that ants would “like all of the food the same”

I couldn’t resist, so I gave her a notebook for her field entries!

She drew her set-up and then recorded what she learned.

We tried the experiment in a few places, but results were similar in every location. The ants weren’t interested (only 1 ant visited watermelon), but the flies were frequent visitors to the meatball and the apples!

I think my heart may burst with joy that the girl enjoyed her experiment!

Pow wow

Last Saturday we had the privilege of attending the 60th anniversary American Indian Institute of Chicago’s Pow wow. It was a wonderful day of learning, enjoying friends and meeting new friends. Here are some of my favorite moments.

The girl enjoyed dancing anytime there was an intertribal dance. She even encouraged her friend to join her (and her mommy)

The portrait this week (not many to choose from) is accompanied by the girl’s first poem (to my knowledge). She just came in the room and said “mommy, peat after me!” Then she proceeded to produce this poem (I promise I have written it down exactly as she said it)

the airplanes flew up in the sky
they bonked their noses, then they cried
they couldn’t see so down they fell
into a mud puddle
and then they were stuck
