Unexpected Time

Growing up in the South, snow meant a free day for everyone! We got to stay home and play! I’ve missed snow days. When you live in a part of the world equipped with snow plows and salt, life doesn’t stop for a little snow. We have had one snow day in 14 years at Wheaton, and that took a storm that dumped close to 2 ft in one night. It happened to be the girl’s second birthday!!!

The public schools have snow days, but mostly they have “cold” days. We had 2 this week, and because my classes haven’t started I got to enjoy them! We have snow, but it’s -20 to -30 with the windchill, so we did not take advantage of the snow. Instead, the girl and I spent some unexpected time together indoors! It was wonderful. She played the piano (a lot)…

…learned a new cello piece…

(The girl played it for her class one of the three days she was in school)

It was perfect!

Happy New Year!

We decided to welcome 2015 in style!

IMG_8004.JPG
the dog was slightly over dressed!

To bring in the new year, we had our own family party! The girl popped a balloon every hour. Each balloon had an activity inside…helping is count down the hours quickly.

6:00 – Taco Dinner!!! The girl’s favorite.

7:00 – Reading…and mommy did most of it so the girl could “look at the pictures

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Affairs of the heart

Christmas seems like a good time to think about our hearts. This fall we learned a lot more about hearts than I ever hoped to learn. It all started with the girl waking up to her heart feeling rushed. One thing…

IMG_7771.JPG

led to another…

IMG_7772.JPG

and to another..

IMG_7775.JPG

…and we eventually learned that other than beating fast at times (tachycardia) there is nothing to worry about.

IMG_7776.JPG

At the same time we were learning about her heartbeat, the girl was opening her heart to Jesus!

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14

This Christmas, we are thankful that the girl’s heart is good! It’s better than good!!

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:21

Christmas Muffin

The girl heard some holiday music at school last week. She’s been singing All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth since she learned it. I think it’s her favorite because her two front teeth are wiggly and she’s hoping to lose them for Christmas.

one afternoon the girl told me that she   really didn’t like “the muffin song”. She said “it’s annoying”. I asked her to sing me a little because I am not familiar with “the muffin song”. She sings “I’m getting muffins for Christmas…”

To the tune of “I’m getting nuthin for Christmas…”

I think we have a new tradition. Muffins at Christmas!

Excited to try something new!

We took the girl to Millennium Park to take free ice skating lessons.

IMG_7407.JPG
Our first lesson was that ice is slippery, and skating is hard.

The girl kept trying:

By the end of the lesson, she was skating on her own!

Giving Thanks

IMG_7369.JPG
We have so much to be thankful for! This year we were reminded to give thanks for good health. The girl has been under the weather all week. We even had to cancel our travel plans.
Nurse Amos was quite concerned.

IMG_7312.JPG
By Thanksgiving day, the girl was up for a craft…

IMG_7364.JPG

IMG_7365.JPG
Here is our turkey. It has a snood (with polka dots) and a waddle, and according to the girl:
A turkey is a funny bird
His head goes, wobble wobble
And all it knows is just one word…
Gobble, Gobble, Gobble

IMG_7367.JPG

IMG_7366.JPG

We did have a somewhat “traditional” thanksgiving dinner with turkey and dressing:

IMG_7343.JPG
But all the girl has been talking about this week were tacos…so we ended up with thanksgiving tacos too!

Boo!!!

Halloween was really fun this year! The girl wanted to be a cheetah, so I dusted off my costume making skills and came up with this:

IMG_7200-0.JPG

The best part was the magnetic tail.

We carved some mean pumpkins!

IMG_7195.JPG

IMG_7196.JPG
The squirrels thought that they needed to be meaner, so they changed the design a bit…

IMG_7198.JPG

IMG_7197.JPG

The girl wasn’t too happy about it until I convinced her that Cyclops were very scary!

Trick or treating was so much fun, despite the cold wind! Here’s the neighborhood gang!

IMG_7199.JPG

I wonder what the girl will be next year? Here is her Halloween history:
2014 -cello playing cheetah

IMG_7194-0.JPG
2013 – Dolphin

IMG_7203.JPG

2012 – Rocket Girl

IMG_7204.JPG

2011 – the Parrot and her pirate

IMG_7205.JPG

2010 – busy bee!

IMG_7206.JPG

2009 – the cutest caterpillar you’ve ever seen!

A different pace

This semester, I’ve been walking to work after I walk the girl to school. I’ve really enjoyed the slower pace, time to think and watching the small signs of the changing seasons.

IMG_6632.JPG

I really love all of the flowers.

IMG_6450.JPG

IMG_6502.JPG
There was a cool wasp nest along my walk, but it’s gone now.

IMG_6446.JPG
Squirrels and geese sometimes scold me, but they are starting to recognize me.

IMG_6503-0.JPG

IMG_6642.JPG

I even have time to see our smallest neighbors.

IMG_6592.JPG

My favorite thing about this new pace is this…
